Wells Fargo Corporate & Investment Banking (CIB) is looking for a high-level Executive Director to join its Physical Commodities Trading platform. This is a senior-level role focused on one of the most specialized areas of finance: Municipal Natural Gas and Power Prepayment transactions (“Muni Prepays”). If you are a veteran in FICC Commodities or Global Markets with a track record of closing multi-decade energy deals, this position offers a massive opportunity to lead Wells Fargo’s expansion in the public power and tax-exempt energy markets.
Understanding the Role: What is a Muni Prepay?
In simple terms, a “Muni Prepay” is a complex, long-term financing structure where a municipal utility (like a city’s gas or electric department) issues tax-exempt bonds to pay for a long-term supply of energy upfront. As the Executive Director, you are the architect of these deals. You sit at the intersection of energy markets, public finance, and derivatives.
Your Primary Responsibilities:
- Deal Origination: You will be the “engine” for new business, identifying and sourcing prepay opportunities where Wells Fargo can act as the supplier, swap counterparty, or underwriter.
- Complex Structuring: You will design and model these multi-decade transactions. This isn’t just about math; it’s about coordinating with legal, tax, and risk teams to ensure the deal is secure and compliant.
- Relationship Management: You’ll maintain a “gold-standard” network of contacts, including municipal aggregators, joint action agencies, and community choice aggregators (CCAs).
- Risk & Hedging: You will partner directly with trading desks to source physical energy volumes and implement hedging strategies that manage the price exposure inherent in a 20- or 30-year deal.
- Execution Leadership: You own the deal from the first handshake to the final signature, ensuring every internal risk governance and regulatory requirement is met.
What You Need to Bring
Wells Fargo is looking for a senior professional who already speaks the language of FICC and public finance.
Required Experience:
- 7+ years of Securities Sales/Engineering experience.
- 5+ years specifically in capital markets, energy origination, or municipal finance at a top-tier bank or energy firm.
Desired Expertise:
- Proven Track Record: You must have a “hands-on” history of originating and executing Muni Prepays.
- Deep Market Knowledge: You should understand the nuances of tax-exempt municipal financing and physical energy markets (Gas and Power).
- Modeling Skills: Strong financial modeling experience for non-recourse and structured energy transactions.
- Senior Credibility: You are someone who can walk into a room of senior decision-makers at a public utility and build immediate trust.
The Practical Details
- Locations: This role is based in the major energy and finance hubs of New York City (Hudson Yards) or Houston, Texas.
- Compensation: The base pay is listed at $275,000, though total compensation usually includes incentive opportunities based on performance.
- Travel: Expect to travel up to 25% of the time for client meetings and industry conferences.
- Dodd-Frank Compliance: Because you’ll be dealing with swaps, this role requires specialized background screening to meet federal “Associated Person” requirements.
