Website Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo is searching for a Principal Engineer to act as a high-level technical authority and strategic advisor. This is a heavy-hitting role that sits at the intersection of enterprise Java architecture and the rapidly evolving world of Generative AI. You won’t just be managing; you’ll be shaping the long-term technology roadmap for one of the world’s largest financial institutions.
The Core Mission
As a Principal Engineer—Java & GenAI, your job is to translate complex business problems into scalable, future-ready technical solutions. You will be the “visionary in the room,” advising senior leadership on how to implement AI and modern JVM stacks to give the bank a competitive edge.
Key Responsibilities:
- Enterprise Stewardship: You’ll define the architecture for Java-based platforms and GenAI solutions across multiple lines of business, ensuring they meet strict security and regulatory standards.
- Hands-On Leadership: Unlike many “Principal” roles, this remains deeply hands-on. You will design, review, and occasionally code critical components to set the standard for engineering rigor.
- GenAI Enablement: You’ll lead the strategy for embedding AI into core workflows. This includes everything from RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) patterns to model orchestration and AI pipelines.
- Modernization & Strategy: You will continuously scan the industry for new patterns and fintech trends, bringing an “outside-in” perspective to challenge legacy thinking and simplify existing platforms.
What You Need to Bring
Wells Fargo is looking for “Deep Hands-On Engineering Expertise” combined with top-tier leadership skills.
Required:
- 7+ years of Engineering experience (or equivalent training/military experience).
Desired Technical “Superpowers”:
- Modern Java Expert: Deep experience with modern JVM stacks, microservices, distributed systems, and performance engineering.
- AI Architect: Proven track record of building AI-powered solutions, specifically with LLM integration, prompt engineering, and AI pipelines.
- Cloud-Native Guru: Strong background in containerization, orchestration, and DevSecOps at an enterprise scale.
- Communication Excellence: You must be able to explain complex AI concepts to anyone from a junior dev to a federal regulator or a C-suite executive.
Why This Role is Unique
- Influence Without Authority: You will be a technical authority across global, matrixed teams, recognized as a trusted advisor who can constructively challenge assumptions.
- Responsible AI: You’ll be at the forefront of “Responsible AI” practices, ensuring that large-scale models are explainable and secure.
- Outcome-Driven: Success isn’t just about shipping code; it’s measured by business impact improved time-to-market, resilience, and customer experience.
