Reaching 100 with care

Atrius Health, a proud member of the Optum and UnitedHealth Group family, is seeking a Patient Service Representative I. This role is a vital part of the Internal Medicine Access Center, serving as the first point of contact for patients across 28 practice locations in eastern Massachusetts.

This is a remote-first position, but it carries a specific residency requirement: Candidates must live in Massachusetts. While you will work from home, you must be able to commute to the Boston (Post Office Square) site for the initial 4–6 weeks of training or in the event of technical/internet issues.

The Mission: Connecting Patients to Care

As a Patient Service Representative, you are a problem-solver and patient advocate. You will manage the flow of communication between patients and clinical teams to ensure every individual receives timely and coordinated care.

Your Primary Responsibilities:

  • Communication Management: Screen incoming inquiries via phone and medical record messages, directing them to the appropriate clinical staff.
  • Administrative Coordination: Initiate requests for medication renewals, referrals, prior authorizations, and legal/medical forms.
  • Record Maintenance: Facilitate the updating of critical patient data, including insurance information and primary care physician selections.
  • Clinic Optimization: Review appointment schedules to ensure clinic utilization is optimized for both providers and patients.
  • Data Collection: Assist with tracking telephone statistics and “no-show” reports to help the department improve service quality.

Who You Are

UnitedHealth Group is looking for technology-literate individuals who possess a “customer-first” heart and a professional demeanor.

  • Technical Aptitude: Experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) is preferred, along with proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Communication Skills: Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally and handle multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience: While 1+ years of clinical or customer service experience is preferred, an aptitude for mastering healthcare technology is key.
  • Location: Must live within a commutable distance of Boston, MA, for training and emergency onsite support.

Compensation & Equity in Healthcare

UnitedHealth Group is a mission-driven organization committed to reducing health disparities and providing equitable care.

  • Pay Range: $16.15 – $28.80 per hour, depending on experience and education.
  • Incentives: Comprehensive benefits including a 401(k), equity stock purchase plan, and performance recognition programs.
  • Health Equity: UnitedHealth Group actively tracks and works to mitigate barriers to health. For context, CDC data shows that certain marginalized groups experience higher rates of chronic conditions such as diabetes (12.1% for Hispanic and 11.7% for Non-Hispanic Black adults) compared to 7.5% for Non-Hispanic White adults. Roles like this are critical in bridging those gaps through better access and coordination.
