This isn’t your run-of-the-mill, garden-variety DevOps job where you just spin up basic servers and write standard scripts. Akamai is hunting for a heavy-hitting Senior II DevOps Engineer to step right into the deep end of their Zero Trust Security Group.
If you want a role where you are building high-level cloud infrastructure that secures the digital experiences of billions of people every single day, you need to look at what this job actually demands. Here is the unfiltered truth about what it’s going to take to land this seat, what the daily grind looks like, and what Akamai is actually putting on the table for compensation.
The Reality Of The Job
- In this role, you aren’t just a regular system administrator. You are a core builder who acts as the primary bridge between Akamai’s elite development teams and the cloud infrastructure itself.
- Your main mission is to design, scale, and ruthlessly optimize CI/CD pipelines to ensure that software is deployed smoothly, reliably, and fast. You will spend your days hunting down pipeline bottlenecks, fixing performance issues, and documenting workflows so that other engineering teams actually know how to use the platforms you create.
- But here is the real kicker that separates this job from standard tech roles: you are working on enterprise-grade network security projects that must meet strict federal compliance baselines. You will be building infrastructures that adhere to intense FedRAMP and FIPS standards. That means security can never be an afterthought or something you patch up later, it has to be completely baked into your Infrastructure as Code from day one.
What Akamai Is Looking For
Because this is a Senior II position, the bar is exceptionally high. They do not want someone who needs their hand held.
- The Mileage: You need a minimum of 8+ years of dedicated professional experience under your belt, alongside a relevant Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a similar field.
- Core Systems & Scripting: You must be incredibly fluent in Linux-based infrastructure and a master of core DevOps scripting languages, particularly Python and Bash.
- Cloud & Orchestration: You need deep, hands-on production experience with Kubernetes, Docker, Helm, and major Cloud Service Providers (whether that is AWS, GCP, or Azure) handled seamlessly through Terraform.
- The Big Gatekeeper: Because you will be touching sensitive environments, you must be a US citizen eligible to obtain a Secret Security Clearance.
What Makes You Fit
If you want to immediately jump to the front of their candidate stack, you need to bring some specific weapons to the table. They are highly interested in candidates who have deep experience with GitOps workflows using tools like Argo CD or enterprise Jenkins. If you have spent time managing VMware or have a background working with AI/MLOps environments, make sure that is plastered right at the top of your resume.
The Compensation
Akamai has a permanent global flexible working program called FlexBase, and it is one of the best parts of their culture. They listened to their employees and decided to give 95% of their workforce the total freedom to choose whether they work entirely from home, fully in a local office, or a hybrid mix of both. For this position, you get that total remote autonomy, provided you reside in the United States to keep their security and tax compliance clear.
When it comes to money, they are transparent but offer a massive, broad range based on your location and how much experience you actually bring to the table.
The base salary for a US-based candidate sits between $112,500 and $202,500 a year.
But that is just the baseline. The full financial package also includes annual performance-based cash bonuses, stock options/equity awards, and access to an Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP). On top of that, they cover industry-leading healthcare, a solid 401(k) match, generous paid time off, and a huge corporate focus on mental and financial wellness.
